🧾 Custom-made Lasihylly

Upgrade your space with a sleek and timeless lasihylly. Whether you’re designing a bathroom shelf, a kitchen display or adding elegance to a glass cabinet, a tailor-made lasihylly adds light, space and function in one simple solution.

All shelves are custom cut to size – you choose the thickness, glass type and edge polish. For clean aesthetics, we recommend polished edges. Tempered glass is recommended for safety, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. You can also select tint options or low-iron glass for optimal clarity.

Shelf brackets are available when ordering with the glass – choose what fits your space best. Installation is simple and support is always available.

Below you'll find more details about glass options and answers to frequently asked questions.

Tempered glass

Tempered glass

We strongly recommend using tempered glass for Lasihylly, especially if the shelf includes holes or will face regular handling and load.

  • Up to stronger than regular glass in bending – safer during installation and use
  • Resists high thermal stress – even 200°C difference
  • Shatters into small, mostly harmless granules when broken

Tempered glass brings daily safety and reliability. If your shelf includes lighting, electrical devices or hot items, we strongly recommend tempering.

Holes in the glass concentrate stress – therefore, tempering is practically required when holes are added.

Note: While tempered glass is safe, its safety mechanism activates completely if the edge or corner is hit sharply – the entire glass will shatter. Standard float glass may survive such an impact.

Glass thickness and usage

Glass thickness and usage

Lasihylly can be manufactured in various thicknesses depending on what you plan to store and how the shelf is supported.

  • 6 mm – Most common for light-duty use (bathrooms, kitchens, display cases)
  • 8 mm – Recommended for moderate loads or larger spans
  • 10–19 mm – For wide, load-bearing or visually bold shelf designs

Glass shelf strength depends heavily on bending resistance, not just weight. Key factor: distance between support points. For example:

  • A shelf 766 mm wide supported only at the ends may bend with 6 mm glass. Either increase thickness or add a center bracket.
  • Three-point support halves the bending span, reducing flex and improving strength.
  • A small shelf, e.g., 300 × 300 mm, supported on three sides can be made from just 4 mm glass.

Note that somewhat counterintuitively, narrow glass shelves flex more easily than deeper ones, even if the support span is identical. This is due to the geometry of bending – don’t rely on width alone to estimate shelf stiffness.

Tempered glass offers significantly better bending resistance – we recommend it for larger, thinner or more exposed shelves.

Measuring and Installation Gaps

Measuring and Installation Gaps

Lasihylly can be measured in different ways depending on how and where the shelf is installed. Here are two common cases:

Shelf in open space with wall brackets

  • Measure the intended width and depth for the glass shelf.
  • Subtract the space taken by the brackets – typically 4–6 mm total from the width.
  • This ensures proper fit and clean placement without stress on the glass.

Shelf inside a recessed niche (3-wall fit)

  • Measure the width at back, middle, and front – use the smallest value.
  • Subtract 2–3 mm from width and 2–3 mm from depth for installation clearance.
  • Always check if the walls are straight – even slight warping can impact fit.

We recommend using padding shims (rubber or thin felt) to avoid hard contact between the glass edge and wall.

Remember: Never trust blueprints – measure the actual space carefully on-site!

Backpainting (RAL Color Options)

Backpainting (RAL Color Options)

Lasihylly can also be made with a fully backpainted surface, making the shelf both functional and decorative. This is a great option for adding color to match or contrast with your wall or furniture.

You can choose from our standard RAL tones in the order form, or send your own RAL code. If you want something even more custom, you can contact our customer support and send a reference color sample.

The backpainting is always applied to the rear surface of the glass, and that painted side must face the wall or cabinet to protect it from wear. If you're ordering backpainting, always use the clear glass surface for measuring and planning hole placements and orientation.

When painted black, you cannot tell whether the glass is standard or low-iron.

We do not recommend etched (frosted) glass in areas where it can get wet or greasy – such as kitchen environments.

Holes and Mounting

Holes and Mounting

Lasihylly can be installed using mounting brackets with through-holes. Typically, holes range from 6–12 mm in diameter depending on the fitting and design.

Holes are drilled before tempering and should be precisely positioned according to your drawing or measurements.

Hole positions are always measured from the glass edge to the center of the hole – for example, from the bottom left corner (X mm from left, Y mm from bottom).

The hole edges remain rough and are meant to be hidden under fittings or other coverings.

Holes over 20 mm in diameter can be frosted matte with CNC grinding, and holes over 45 mm can even be polished clear. These are extra services – contact our support if you need visible holes finished to high standards.

Tip: If your shelf includes holes, we highly recommend tempered glass for added strength. Non-tempered glass can crack more easily around the drilled areas.

Corner Radius Options

Corner Radius Options

Lasihylly can be safely and beautifully finished with corner rounding. This softens the look and adds safety – especially in open areas or where children may be present.

  • R1 mm – barely visible, only felt by touch
  • R3 mm – most popular, softens the corner without altering the shape
  • R10–R12.5 mm – similar to a coin, clearly rounded
  • R60 mm – comparable to a CD, visually noticeable
  • R150 mm – like a vinyl record, distinctly round corner

Corner rounding can be applied individually – either just to the front corners or all four. We recommend at least R3 mm rounding to reduce edge sharpness and improve safety.

Can I install a glass shelf myself?

Yes, you can install a glass shelf yourself using the correct brackets and tools, and by following safety instructions. Always wear cut-resistant gloves and safety goggles – handling glass carries a small risk.

How do I choose the right glass thickness for a shelf?

Most common is 6 mm tempered glass, but it depends on the width, support points, and use. Narrow or 3-side supported shelves may use even 4 mm. For wider shelves with only end supports, 8–10 mm or more is recommended.

Can the glass shelf have holes for brackets?

Yes, we can drill mounting holes, for example for disc brackets. Holes must be positioned before tempering, based on your sketch or drawing. If holes remain visible, we can finish them neatly as an extra service.

Does the glass shelf need to be tempered?

It doesn't have to be, but we recommend tempered glass based on location and usage. Tempered glass handles bending, heat and impact better – it's safer especially if the shelf carries weight or is placed high. Non-tempered may be sufficient if small and well supported.

How do I account for brackets in the measurements?

If using side brackets, reduce the total width so the brackets fit at the ends. If installing between walls, reduce 2–3 mm on each side so the shelf can slide into place without stress.
